Frequently Asked Questions About Saunas

Detoxing Support Protocols

The Basics

This FAQ is designed to clear up the "mystery" around saunas and help you feel confident using them as a tool for renewal.

Q: Is sauna therapy a requirement of the program? No, saunas are completely optional. We recommend them because they act as a "catalyst" for your healing, significantly speeding up the detoxification of the liver and skin. While not required, most clients find they feel much better when incorporating them into their routine.

Q: Are there any conditions where saunas should be avoided? Yes. If you have active skin cancer, you should not use an infrared lamp sauna. Additionally, those with rosacea may find that the heat aggravates their skin. We recommend testing your response in a sauna at a gym or a friend's house before investing in one for your home.

Disclaimer. The following information is presented for educational purposes only. No claims are made for any procedures described here, nor are they intended to treat, prescribe, or diagnose any disease or condition. Most individuals find these methods safe and effective when followed correctly, but you should always consult with your health provider before starting a new detoxification protocol.

Why Near-Infrared (NIR)?

Q: Why is a Near-Infrared Lamp sauna better than traditional or Far-Infrared types? Traditional saunas require intense heat (often over 180°F) to work, which can be uncomfortable and take longer to penetrate your tissues. Far-infrared saunas often operate with higher EMF (electromagnetic field) exposure.

The NIR Lamp advantage: * Deeper Penetration: The light energy penetrates tissues more quickly at lower, more comfortable air temperatures.

  • Low EMF: These units produce minimal electromagnetic stress on the body.

  • Color Therapy: The visible red light provides "photobiomodulation" (cellular light therapy) that traditional saunas lack.

  • Cost-Effective: They are generally more affordable to purchase and operate.

Timing & Protocol

Q: How long and how often should I use the sauna? Everyone’s heat tolerance is unique and can even change as your biochemistry shifts on your program.

  • Fast Oxidizers: Your body tends to run "hot" already. Start with no more than 3 sessions per week (up to 20 minutes) and slowly work up to daily use.

  • Slow Oxidizers: You can typically start with daily 20-minute sessions.

  • The "Four Lows" Pattern: If your HTMA indicates a "Four Lows" pattern, we recommend limiting your total sauna time to 40 minutes per day.

The Golden Rule: Always listen to your body. If you feel faint or extremely uncomfortable, end the session immediately and lie down until it passes. You can work your way up to 40 minutes once or twice a day as you acclimate.

Q: What if I’m having a "Healing Reaction" or an infection? If you are dealing with an infection flare-up, shorter, more frequent saunas (15 minutes, up to 6 times a day) are often best. If you are in the middle of a heavy detox/healing reaction, keep sessions very short (5 minutes) or pause them entirely until the reaction settles.

Preparation & Safety

Q: Should I drink water during my session? Absolutely. Hydration is critical. We recommend drinking 8–16 ounces of spring or distilled water shortly before or during your session to prevent dehydration. Remember to add a pinch of sea salt to your water afterward to replenish lost minerals!

Q: Where can I buy a reliable NIR light unit? We recommend the 3-light units from heatlampsaunas.com. They are well-built, affordable, and easy to set up.

Q: What kind of water and filters should I use in my home? The quality of the water you drink (and sweat out) matters. To learn more about the best water for mineral balancing, see our post on Pure Water and Proper Hydration.
