This HTMA Mineral Balancing glossary is intended to help clients of Renewing Vitality understand their healing protocol.
HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis)
A soft-tissue biopsy that measures the mineral content of the hair. Unlike blood tests, which show what is currently circulating in the transit system of the body, HTMA reveals what is actually being stored in the tissues over a 3-month period. It is the "blueprint" we use to build your custom protocol.
Mineral Balancing
A holistic health system that uses HTMA to determine a person’s unique biochemical needs. The goal is not just to "fix a deficiency" but to restore the body’s internal environment so it can detoxify and repair itself naturally.
Mineral Ratios
In HTMA, the relationship between two minerals is often more important than the level of a single mineral. Ratios represent the balance of the nervous system, blood sugar, and thyroid function. For example, the Calcium/Magnesium (Ca/Mg) ratio is often referred to as the "Blood Sugar Ratio."

Most individuals find these methods safe and effective when followed correctly, but you should always consult with your health provider before starting a new detoxification protocol.

Metabolic & Oxidation Types
Oxidation Type
The rate at which your body burns fuel (carbohydrates and fats) and converts it into energy. Your oxidation type is determined by the balance of your "sedative" minerals (Calcium, Magnesium) versus your "stimulator" minerals (Sodium, Potassium).
Fast Oxidizer
Often referred to as the "stress" or "alarm" state. A Fast Oxidizer burns through nutrients quickly, typically has higher Sodium and Potassium levels, and may struggle with anxiety, high blood pressure, or "burnout."
Slow Oxidizer
The most common metabolic type in the modern world. A Slow Oxidizer has a sluggish metabolism, often characterized by high Calcium and Magnesium (the sedatives). This type may experience fatigue, brain fog, and poor digestion.
Combined (Mixed) Oxidizer
A state where some mineral ratios suggest fast oxidation while others suggest slow. This often indicates a transition phase or a state of metabolic confusion where the body is struggling to find a stable rhythm.
Toxicity & Interference
Toxic Metals
Heavy metals such as Lead, Mercury, Aluminum, Arsenic, and Cadmium. These are non-essential elements that interfere with cellular function. They often "hide" in the tissues and can only be safely removed when the body has the proper mineral "buffer" to push them out.
Toxic Minerals
Even essential minerals can become "toxic" if they are biounavailable or stored in the wrong places. For example, "Metabolic Sodium" or "Biounavailable Copper" can act as irritants to the body if they aren't being utilized correctly at the cellular level.
Copper Toxicity (or Bio-unavailability)
A condition where copper levels are high, but the body cannot use the copper because it lacks the binding proteins (like ceruloplasmin) to transport it. This is a common cause of skin issues, mood swings, and fatigue.
Advanced Concepts
Four Lows Pattern
A specific HTMA pattern where the four main electrolytes (Calcium, Magnesium, Sodium, and Potassium) are all below their ideal levels. This represents a state of deep exhaustion where the body’s "batteries" are severely drained.
Bio-unavailability
When a mineral is present in the body but cannot be used by the cells. This is common with Calcium and Copper. It’s like having a tank full of gasoline but no spark plug to ignite it.
The Sodium-Potassium Pump
A vital mechanism in every cell membrane that regulates electrical charge and hydration. When your Sodium/Potassium (Na/K) ratio is balanced on an HTMA, your cells can effectively move nutrients in and waste products out.
A Note on Smart Supplementation: It is strongly discouraged to supplement without first completing an HTMA (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) test.Taking impure supplements or supplementing out of ratio with other minerals can create deeper imbalances and lead to more serious health concerns. Please ensure you have a professional HTMA test and a guided protocol before starting any random supplement regimen.
